内容説明

This volume offers an account of the Second Empire (1852-1870) as a turning point in modern French political culture, pointing to a period in which thinkings of all political persuasions combined forces to create the democracy that exists today. The author examines the political, social and cultural advances of the time, portraying an intellectual decade during which Bonapartists, legitimists, liberals, and republicans, applied their ideologies to the problem of decentralization. Tracing his text through the books, pamphlets, articles, speeches, and memoirs of the period, he explores a discourse that connects the central state and local political life.
