The book begins with a brief history of the relevant technology and then explains the basic theory of acoustics, electricity and magnetism. the working principles and desgin of all types of microphone are explained in considerable detail, with examples of popular current models and descrptions of microphone accessories.
The second half of the book provides guidelines on the creative balance techniques to be used for musical instruments, voices and ensembles of all kinds in both classical and pop music. production methods are outlined for studios and on location, with notes on public address working for live shows.
John Borwick is Audio Director of Gramophone magazine. He has a long experience of sound recording, first as a BBC studio manager and later as a freelance engineer/producer. he has taught microphones technology and technique both within the BBC and on the unique 4-year Bachelor of Music (Tonmeister) degree course at the University of Survey, which he helped to set up in 1971, and is much in demand as an Audio Consultant.
