内容説明

Covering much of the Western world, this text embraces the history of classical literary scholarship, from the 6th century BC to the start of the 20th century. It provides a history in 12 different ages and localities, and spanning 25 centuries. Each period begins with a chronological table of the scholars of each period, giving their dates of birth and death, followed by a survey of the lives and works of all the leading scholars. The book gives an insight into the political history of each period, and traces the influence on the arts and letters of the modern world. Featured in the text are studies of Italy, Greece, France, Scandinavia, Russia, Holland, Belgium, Germany, USA and the UK. Portraits include Aristotle, Petrarch, Erasmus, Casaubon, Richard Bentley, J.A. Fabricus, J.A. Ernesti, J.J. Reiske, F.A. Wolf, Gottfried Hermann, Franz Bopp, Theodor Mommsen and George Grote.
