The poems of this dual-language collection were inspired by Michelangelo's close friendship with Tommaso de'Cavalieri, a young Roman nobleman, whom Michelangelo met when he was fifty-seven and de'Cavalieri was twenty-one. The friendship that followed was enduring, with the letters and poems addressed to him by Michelangelo testifying to a remarkable love that ended only with the artist's death. Michelangelo claimed it was chaste love, although their relationship caused much gossip and speculation. Illustrations by Michelangelo
