This important book focuses on the experience of the development of a dynamic private enterprise sector in developing countries and transitional economies. The discussion considers privatisation, foreign investment and the ownership of small and medium sized firms in different countries.The first part of the book begins with an overview chapter which places the development of the private sector within the broader context of transition and development. Part two considers the issues of privatisation and enterprise reform with case studies from China, Central and Eastern Europe, the Soviet Union, Russia, Malawi and Ghana, as well as the impact upon employment and social protection of reform and privatisation. The final part focuses on the development of the private sector with a mixture of country case study chapters including Vietnam, Poland, Pakistan and the Newly Industrialising Economies in Asia.
