内容説明

The author's 1995 volume, "The Origins of the Inquisition" sought to challenge accepted belief concerning the causes of the Spanish Inquisition. Locating the origin not in the supposed persistence of Judaism among the New Christians but in a concession the kings were forced to make to powerfully anti-Jewish popular sentiment, he set out to alter the whole landscape of Hispano-Jewish studies. This subsequent volume is intended as an additional contribution to the historiographic revolution. Made up of seven of Netanyahu's essays, published over the last two decades, it illuminates Jewish Marrano history from the mid-14th century to the end of the 15th century. The essays seek to shed light on phenomena such as the rise of the Nazi-like theory of race which harassed the conversos for three centuries and the abandonment of Judaism by most conversos decades before the Inquisition was established.
