Description
In this collection of essays, lectures, exhibition catalogue entries and letters, Robert Motherwell's contribution to the art world as pioneer, lecturer, teacher and artist is examined. Motherwell was enormously influential in the shaping of the art movement known as abstract expressionism that developed in New York City during World War II. This book brings together a representative collection of his writings that were seminal in art theory and the articulation of the artistic process. It contains not only those essays and lectures for which he is renowned, but also a selection of the artist's vanguard editorial work. His work in "Possibilities", the first magazine devoted to art and modern culture in the USA, as well as work from his efforts to draw attention to modern art in the conservative political climate that prevailed in the 1950s, is included.
