Description and Table of Contents
Description
This handbook presents a portable dictionary-style guide to the life and work of modern British painters and printmakers. It offers information on some 2000 artists as well as entries on schools of art, museums, galleries and collections, on societies and groups, critics and patrons who have influenced the development of modern British art. Artists are included if they had finished their training by 1900, and were truly beginning their professional career in the 20th century, or had established themselves professionally on the national scene by 1990. If the artist is foreign-born, he or she is included if they resided in Britain, and exhibited work here, long enough for their presence to be of significance for British artists. Entries are cross-referenced and each biographical outline provides the relevant facts about the artist's life, a brief characterization of their work and major bibliographic references.
