Description

The purpose of "Artificial Neural Networks for Civil Engineers: Fundamentals and Applications" is to provide researchers with an understanding of the potential of artificial neural networks for solving civil engineering related problems, and guidance on how to develop successful implementation for a broad range of problem types. With this aim in mind, this monograph is divided into two parts. The first section addresses fundamental issues in the selection, development and use of neural networks, while the second section provides example applications such as using neural networks to: locate structural damage; control structures; assist project owners in selecting bidders; and model the stress-strain relationship of sand and clay type soils. Many of the ideas and techniques presented in the second section can commute across the disciplinary boundaries and, therefore, should be of interest to all civil engineers.
