内容説明
The decade 1962-1972 was a tumultuous one for the American University. Repeated, and sometimes violent, student demonstrations not only disrupted classes but also prompted some deep soul-searching on the part of professional educators in the United States. This book identifies several recurrent themes found in the professional literature on higher education during this period, and, by relating these to similar issues debated by the nineteenth century English essayists Arnold, Huxley, Mill, and Newman, attempts to clarify the modern idea of the university.
