Description

Compiled from articles written for the Monthly Magazine, the Evening Chronicle and other periodicals, Sketches by Boz (1836-7) was a best seller when it first appeared. It is presented here with other carefully selected pieces of Dickens'journalism, all of which reflected the humour and social concerns that were to characterise Dickens' novels. Besides providing preliminary sketches of the literary world of his novels, Dickens' journalism vividly maps out London as thewriter knew it, a whirlpool of activity and change.
