As the United Nations approaches the 50th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1998, Mary Robinson's theme is the need for fresh approaches in protecting human rights. She reflects publicly for the first time on her new responsibilities as UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and explains that her title 'Realizing Human Rights' emphasises the problem confronting the international community in making human rights protection work.
