This book explores the issue of liability for information provision, both free and fee-based, in the United Kingdom. It examines the legal relationships which exist between information producers and information users, and the extent to which librarians and other information professionals can be held liable for the information they provide. The author discusses those aspects of library and information service which pose the greatest threat in terms of potential litigation, and examines how librarians can minimise the risks of litigation by applying sound management techniques.
Contents: Introduction; Background; The legal status of information; Negligence - what every librarian should know; Analysing and minimising risk; Liability in contract; Conclusions; Suggestions for further reading; Appendix: London Business School Information Service - Terms on which research is undertaken.
