In this work, Mitchell Stephens contends that the image will supersede the word as a means of understanding and entertainment. Although this may indeed signal the end of literacy as we know it, Stephens argues that television and electronic technologies will actually push intellectual progress beyond our wildest imaginings. Just as the development of writing and the invention of the printing press profoundly changed our culture, television has set in motion a third communications revolution.
