These are the papers from the fifth International Symposium on thromboembolic diseases held at Cannes in June 1998. These included three workshops on thromboprophylaxis in non-surgical patients; home therapy with heparins, and which end-points to use in clinical trials of venous thromboembolism. The special case of thrombosis in pregnant women was considered and the need for large scale prospective randomized studies, to evaluate low-molecular-weight heparin in the prevention and treatment of thrombosis during pregnancy, was highlighted.
