内容説明

Based upon a decade of research in four countries, including much data previously unpublished or long unavailable, this book traces the history and explains the meanings of this enigmatic and often misunderstood music. The author examines the origins, history and meaning of the Fado in its home towns, Lisbon, Coimbra and Porto; in Brazil, the United States and Europe. The complex relationship between the music and the media industry from 1904 to the present day is explained in depth; lyrical content and musical instruments are examined, and the social history from which the music rose is charted. Useful appendices and an index are included. Handsomely illustrated with historic and contemporary images, this new work - the first in English since 1936 - tells the story of the Portuguese Fado from every aspect. A 70 minute CD is included with the book, featuring some of the leading performers of Fado.
