Introductions place the play in its historical, social and theatrical context; commentary notes give information on language and staging. The play is a racy comedy of intrigue, action and amorous adventures set in Naples at carnival time during the exile of Charles 11. It is the most important of twenty plays attributed to Aphra Behn (c. 1640-1689), the daring, first successful woman writer of poetry, fiction and drama. This edition takes account of recent critical approaches as well as of the play's recent stage history.
