Description
Examines efforts to establish free labour in the South during and after the Civil War. Schmidt discusses wartime reconstruction in Louisiana, the Thirteenth Amendment, and the Freedmen's Bureau, to conclude that free labour failed because of the undeveloped and contradictory state of labour law.
