内容説明

This book provides important insight on the situation of the family in modern Singapore, and the impact of social policy on the family. It addresses issues such as major trends in marriage and parenthood; the impact on socio-economic development and social changes on family relations and structure. The role of the state in family conflict and in the family-versus-work dilemma receives special attention and is examined through the provision of childcare services, gender roles and the family court. This second edition, revised and expanded, provides a current and detailed analysis of the issues from the first edition, with new developments in the public and private spheres of family life in Singapore. The new chapters analyse the concept of social capital represented by grandparents in Singapore, how values are transmitted across generations, and the resilience of father and mother roles. This second edition engages with the international scene when it discusses the role of the aged in families, and how family policies and relations in Singapore compare with those of other countries. This book is written for policy-makers, social scientists, sociology students and educated readers interested in the situation of the family in modern societies and the role of the state in social policy.
