This study of the function, meaning and use of pictorial art in the funerary context during the Han dynasty refers to social values and contemporary texts describing those values. It presents a broad a logical interpretation of Han pictorial art, based on the works themselves rather than any a proiri theory of their meaning. The late Zhou antecedents, early and middle Western Han, late Western Han and early Eastern Han are all covered. The penultimate chapter focuses on the art of Henan province, and the text finishes with a discussion of th elate Eastern Han, offering a shrines and one late tomb.
