内容説明

The distinguished Chinese mathematician Hua Loo-Keng led an eventful and interesting life through a particularly difficult period in China. This book describes in detail the transformation of Prof. Hua from a self-taught individual with junior middle school education into a mathematician of world renown. Since Hua Loo-Keng held a dominant position within contemporary mathematics in China, the book can also be read as a valuable piece of history of the development of modern mathematics in China. Besides giving a visual account of Hua's research work in number theory and other areas, and of his attitudes and philosophy in the areas of learning and mathematics education, the book also paints a picture of his many years of work on on the popularisation of mathematics in China. It includes a detailed description of the terrible conditions scientists had to endure during the war periods, particularly the horrific time known as the "Cultural Revolution". This definitive biography is written by Prof. Wang Yuan, one of Hua Loo-Keng's distinguished students and former Director of the Institute of Mathematics, who worked closely with Prof. Hua for over thirty years.
