"I realize until I was 18 I lived essentially an Indian life. This came to the fore when I was in India recently. People couldn't believe I am from England, that I was from the big cities, that I spoke the language; my behaviour, the whole thing was exactly as they were used to.."
These are Jitendra's closing words to his potential therapist. Like other books in this series, Jitendra's story provides the opportunity for six different therapists to explore with him what may be the key issues in his present life and past experience: What do they wish to know about him? How do they understand him? How might they work with him? And what outcome can they predict for him as a result of therapy?
In this thought-provoking book - which starts with Jitendra's own story - the reader has the chance to see six different therapists at work, drawing on the same initial material from the one real client. Representatives of Lacanian, Jungian, Personal Construct, Buddhist, Trans-cultural and Psychosynthesis therapy put some fascinating questions to Jitendra and receive some moving answers. The similarities and differences between therapies and therapists are highlighted. And at the end the reader is able to enter Jitendra's own experience of the process, and decide with him, which one he might choose in his search for a therapist.
The particular feature of this volume is its cross-cultural perspective. The client is an Asian man from East Africa: what differences these other perspectives make becomes clear in his response to the six therapists and their particular techniques.
Jitendra - Lost Connections will appeal to a wide range of students and practitioners involved in counselling and psychotherapy, particularly those interested in comparing different therapeutic approaches.
