Description

This yearbook consists of two separate parts: analysis and reference. The first part is made up of ten articles written by independent experts with in-depth knowledge of their subject. The authors provide an up-to-date description and evaluation of the problem concerned, focusing on the results, impediments and challenges to international negotiations, conflicts, and agreements. Subjects covered in this first volume are ozone depletion, climatic change, biodiversity, endangered species, export of hazardous waste, population control, disarmament, environmental law, and sustainable energy development. The second part covers, in a systematic fashion, key data on international agreements on the environment and development, intergovernmental organizations with activities in these areas, and a selective group of non-governmental organizations. Some 100 organizations and conventions are included, each with a two-page spread devoted to them. This section gives information about organization/secretariat, resources/budget, policy measures or rules of conduct established/under negotiation, decision-making bodies and rules, and key publications. The section wil be continuously up-dated so that the information is always current.

Description

This major reference work demonstrates to a worldwide readership how successful the international community has been in solving specific environment and development issues, what are the main obstacles to effective international solutions, and what is needed to overcome these barriers. Part 1 is made up of articles that provide a description and evaluation of the problems concerned, focusing on the results, impediments and challenges to international co-operation. Subjects covered are: marine pollution; the impact of UNCED on environment and development NGOs, and vice versa; safety of nuclear reactors in the former USSR; controversy over sustainable forestry; conversion of the World Bank to green values and sustainable development; international business and sustainable development; GATT and the environment; and biological diversity from a north-south perspective. In Part 2, key data on international agreements on the environment and development are itemized, together with the inter-governmental organizations and a selective group of non-governmental organizations which are active in these areas. This information has been fully updated and the selection of items changed in order to show where most activity has been taking place during the year.
