内容説明
This work forms the first part of a series, "Early Responses to Hume's Writings", a collection of 18th- and 19th-century critical publications on Hume's philosophical, political, economic and historical writings. The themes of the two volumes printed here are the replies to Hume's moral philosophy, and literary and political essays. Selections are edited, annotated and introduced by Hume scholar James Fieser, editor and founder of two web sites, the "Hume Archives" and the "Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy". Many of the selections have not been reprinted since their original publication, being inaccessible to many scholars worldwide. Self-contained, these volumes are a contribution towards understanding Hume and 18th-century philosophy and thought. The series "Early Responses to Hume's Writings" will include three further pairs of volumes to be published at yearly intervals: "Early Responses to Hume's Metaphysical and Epistemological Writings"; "Early Responses to Hume's Writings on Religion"; "Early Responses to Hume's History of England".
Also edited, annotated and introduced by James Fieser, these will include French and German book reviews translated into English for the first time. Taken together this printed set forms a resource of 18th- and 19th-century thought for academics and scholars in many areas of the humanities: philosophy, Scottish Enlightenment, theology, literature and history.
