This is a collection of reports written by actual end-users of write-once optical disk-based systems from a variety of industries including insurance and transportation. It is composed of presentations on write-once optical disk systems delivered at the Optical Information Systems '89 Conference and Exposition held September 6-8, 1989 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Crystal City, Arlington, VA. Although it does not contain written reports on all conference end-user discussions, it does offer discussions of implementations in the following areas: personnel records management, astronomic archiving, aircraft maintenance records management, storage of microscopy images, electronic imaging and document preservation, the Navy's Paperless Ship Project, and technical chemical report archiving. In addition, this book includes two chapters not based on OIS '89 presentations: an overview of optical memory card implementations, and an examination of how an insurance company uses the optical disk to manage policy information. In addition to these ten chapters is a selective listing of current end-users of write-once optical storage. It offers the reader a selection of the various companies, organizations, and groups who are supportive of optical storage technology as a new information management tool.
