This keen study provides an interesting description of the cultural assimilation of two separate groups in Manipur. These two peoples are geographically separated and culturally distinct, yet their myths of origin speak of a common parentage. Brara uses Clifford Geertz's notion of the theater state, an influential concept from the pages of cultural anthropology, to understand contemporary politics and ethnic relations in the North East Hill region.
