内容説明

Robert Boyle (1627-91) was an influential scientist and philosopher of the 17th century. The founder of modern chemistry, he headed the movement that turned it from an occult science into a subject grounded in experiment, methodology, and observation. His experiments on the properties of gases and his mechanistic theory of matter are the forerunners of the modern theories of chemical elements and the atomic theory. He is best known for founding the Boyle Lectures and for Boyle's Law that states that the pressure and volume of a gas are inversely proportional. He wrote on aetheism, atomism, epistemology, miracles and natural laws. This collection of Boyle's works brings together his varied writings in a fully-indexed source. Covering his work in chemistry, philosophy and theology, it includes a "Life of Boyle" by Thomas Birch.
