This is an account of what it is like to start and develop a rapidly developing company in Britain today. It is told by an outsider who took an opportunity to become familiar with and describe the culture of the organization from the inside. Staff at all levels are quoted speaking about the difficulties as well as the achievements of the company. The founders, Richard Lines and Brian Wiggins, talk about overcoming daunting initial problems and lessons learned the hard way. MTM was founded to make intermediate chemicals in the early 1980s when the chemical industry world-wide was a disaster area. In doing so the founders encountered deep scepticism from the industry and especially the key potential customers on whom their survival would depend. Today, only 8 years on, MTM is international, with manufacturing subsidiaries world-wide. Its products contribute to the manufacture of pharmaceuticals and paints, heart drugs and herbicides, and much more besides. This is a business story which shows how to survive and flourish in the demanding environment of manufacturing industry today. The author has previously written "Secrets of Success: What You Can Learn From Britain's Entrepreneurs", and has co-authored "Shaping the Corporate Future: Leading Executives Share their Vision and Strategies".
