Description
This study offers a brief analytical survey of a rich and varied period in British political and social thought. Its main aim is to present a picture of Victorian political thought that incorporates the insights of an abundance of recent work in the history of ideas, and so to place leading thinkers such as Mill, Bagehot and Spencer in a broader historical context. Stuart Jones highlights the Victorian thinkers' quest for an intellectually authoritative foundation for a body of political, social and moral principles.
