内容説明

This catalogue describes and illustrates the 175 Dutch, Flemish and German pictures of the 15th to 19th centuries in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (with the exception of the Dutch and Flemish still-life paintings from the Daisy Linda Ward Bequest, which are being catalogued in a separate volume). The Museum's holdings contain a number of important pictures, such as the group of landscape and genre paintings by Dutch 17th-century artists. Some of the pictures in this catalogue were already in the possession of the University in the 18th century, but the collection was transformed by a major gift of 31 Flemish 17th-century paintings in 1855 by the collector and amateur artist Chambers Hall (1786-1855). This outstanding group includes four brilliant oil-sketches by Rubens for the ceiling of the Jesuit Church in Antwerp and one for the Joyous Entry of the Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand into Antwerp, as well as two rare oil sketches by van Dyck. Other pictures have been added by subsequent donation or bequest.
