A textbook on the geography of Western Europe designed for degree-level students and their instuctors seeking a thematically organized text that deals with the contemporary issues that confront the continent. The Institute of British Geographers, following on from their very successful text on the British Isles (Johnston and Doornkamp, "The changing Geography of Britain", Methuen, 1983) have assembled an experienced and distinguished team of contributors, all of whom are well-know textbook writers as well as leading researchers in their field. The result is a balanced and integrated portrait of the human geography of this dynamic region, with an emphasis on the great changes that will transform Europe's space between now and the turn of the century. The main theme of industrial and economic change, cities, agriculture, the environment and population are the foundation of the text's approach, but they are presented in an original and thought-provoking way that will engage the student's attention. There is a particular attention paid to the impact of technological change and the geographical impact of adjusting to the "post-industrial" world of late 20th century Europe.
The scale of treatment is continent-wide and processes are illustrated by appropriate examples, many based on the authors' own research.
