An in-depth examination of the entire range of streptococcal diseases, including related organisms (pneumococci and enterococci). Recent outbreaks of invasive streptococcal infections ("flesh eating" bacteria and toxic shock), the increasing incidence of multiple antibiotic resistance, and the drive to develop effective vaccines have brought strep back to the forefront as an important infectious disease. This will be the first comprehensive and scholarly treatment of this group of diseases since the mid-70s, and will appeal to infectious disease physicians, pediatricians, internists, and researchers.
