内容説明

In 1878, a decade into the Meiji restoration, the author explored the north-eastern district of Japan and Hokkaido. This book is the first record on the interior of Japan by a westerner. She observed ordinary Japanese village and town life including dress, food, religion, buildings and customs. Her observations on the Ainu are particularly interesting. Reprint of the original edition.
