At the turn of the millennium, there is much discussion about the demise of Asian capitalism. The East Asian development model, which built the theoretical and institutional framework of growth in the region, is blamed along with the rest of what was once called the East Asian miracle. In an effort to provide a rich, textured analysis of the East Asian economies, Frank-Jurgen Richter presents a collection of essays that explores the perspectives of the East Asian development model. The contributors provide a cohesive review of the East Asian development model, exploring its cultural heritage, the political context through which it arose, its basic assumptions, and its recent failures. In particular, they identify the causes and consequences of the Asian economic crisis, describe the features of economic development throughout the region, and discuss the strategic responses of Asian firms to newly emerging economic environments. The works collected here make an important contribution to a new Asian economic framework that recognizes and emphasizes the opportunities for the rebuilding of East Asia.
A unique resource for scholars and professionals in the fields of economics and management, this book enables a complex analysis of one of the world's most challenging regions.
