Description
This is a highly readable account of the career of one of the most dedicated official of the British Indian Empire in the 19th Century. Sleeman arrived as a cadet in the Bengal army in 1809 and retired as a major general in 1854. In this book, the author takes the reader through the lanes and by lanes of his memory and relates his experiences. This work is full of observations on the people, their rituals, their religion and mythology, the local and area politics, his official duties etc. For a long duration of his career he was stationed in central India as the commissioner for the suppression of the Thugee activities. This book is a reprint of the 1893 edition.
