This one-stop reference source on the most frequently requested, read and studied authors is uniquely structured. Volume One, "Authors", lists 2,800 writers throughout history: it provides the basic information of name, pseudonyms, birth and death dates and places, and a listing of his or her major publications arranged by genre. Volumes Two and Three, "Titles", lists tens of thousands of published works in alphabetical order. Entries provide the title as it is best known in English, the original title (if the work was originally published in a language other than English), author, date of first publication (and date of first English translation if the work was not written in English), genre, and any relevant notes--for purposes of identification (e.g., that the work is part of a series).
The three volumes of the Fitzroy Dearborn Directory of Books and Authors are designed specifically for the reference librarian and provide an easy-to-use listing of virtually all the authors and works that librarians may be called to identify.
