Conservation of biodiversity is important especially in relation to forests. Pressures on forest resources are severe and so there is a need to provide a sound scientific basis for conservation management. This book addresses this need by drawing together the principles of forest conservation genetics. The work introduces the principles and practices of forest conservation genetics. It progresses from basic genetics through genetic processes to threats and policy and socio-economic considerations. The authors have assumed the reader has only a basic understanding of genetics and have limited the mathematical content to that necessary for grasping concepts presented in the book. An international team of contributors has drawn on experiences and examples from South East Asia, Australia, United States, Europe, South America and Africa in collaborating on this book.

Effective management of forest genetic resources is a key element in future forest conservation. Genetic diversity is essential for both the long-term stability and the short-term productivity of forest ecosystems. Hence there is a great need for information on forest conservation genetics. The book consists of 22 chapters and is divided into five parts integrating genetic, ecological and socioeconomic information. It also includes, as a CD-ROM, the population genetics software package POPGENE.
