Description and Table of Contents

Description

Most large cities, east and west, have their licensed quarters but few have been so elaborate and sophisticated as that of Edo. A city within a city, something like a small civilization, it continued to flourish as the old metropolis became the new capital, Tokyo, and even managed to survive, though considerably scaled down, until comparatively recent times. This is a reprint of the fifth edition from 1905.
