内容説明
Since the Second World War, many countries in South, Southeast and East Asia have achieved rapid economic growth, and transformed their economies from subsistence economies, to exporters of primary products, and more recently, to world centres of manufactured exports. This process has seen rising average incomes and standards of living. Important social and political changes have also taken place as a consequence of these developments. This book is an introductory account of the major trends in the economic, social and political development of Asian countries in the second half of the 20th century. Asian Development also discusses the impact of colonization, the major changes in economic structure and growth, the shift from agriculture to industry, the rise of export-oriented industrialization, the impact of globalisation, and the outbreak of the Asian currency crisis. It analyses the major social changes that have occurred, including demographic changes, rising educational attainments, and the changing role of women in Asian societies. The major political developments in Asian countries, are also examined, especially the rise of authoritarian governments, the role of political dissidents, and the trend towards democracy.
