Description
This volume explores the achievements of Rome, from its modest beginnings circa 800 BC to its domination of the Mediterranean and Western Europe during the first centuries of the Christian era. After an introductory chapter on Roman civilization, the author traces the history of antiquarianism through the Renaissance to the development of Roman archaeology in the present day. Additional topics include the Etruscans, the Romans in Italy and the expansion of the Roman Empire. Four visual stories display the work of the Renaissance painter Mantegna seen in the light of his Classical models, the site of Pompeii and its frescoes, the Etruscan tombs at Cerveteri and spectator sports in the Roman world.
