This book recognizes that the human component of the computer system - the SoftSide of Software - is essential to the continued growth of the computer industry. No longer can we measure the impact of the technology by advances in computer memory or speed. Rather, progress will be measured in terms of features that promote human understanding of computer systems. In its broadest sense, documentation is the tool that offers people the highest possible level of interaction with the computer. The premise of this book is that 'user-friendly' documentation depends on recognition of the human operating the system, understanding how humans assimilate information and configuring documentation accordingly. Creating user-friendly systems requires this attitude throughout the design and production processes. This book represents a departure from a traditional view of computer software documentation. The authors goal is to explore this complex subject from the perspective of user understanding rather than user instruction.
