Hardbound. Insulin resistance was recognized as a feature and a pathogenic mechanism in pathological states such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity. More recently, however, it has become apparent that an impairment in insulin action is shared by a variety of conditions not necessarily associated with diabetes or obesity. These conditions include essential hypertension, dyslipidemia, endothelial dysfunction, hyperuricemia and many others. Moreover, these conditions tend to cluster with insulin resistance prompting the definition of the Syndrome of Insulin Resistance.
