内容説明

Melatonin influences a variety of functions, e.g., seasonal reproduction in animals, circadian rhythms, sleep processes, immune function, oxidant/antioxidant balance, cancer biology, and many others. Our understanding of what melatonin does has increased substantially. Several variants of the membrane melatonin receptor have been cloned, other receptors have been proposed and non-receptor-mediated processes of melatonin have been uncovered. Much of this new information, in particular, the potential clinical applications of the new findings are brought into perspective with this publication. The reports show that research on melatonin (and other secretory products of the pineal gland) is no longer the exclusive domain of basic scientists, but has become of significant interest to clinicians as well. This publication will therefore meet expectations and find wide interest both among clinicians and academic researchers especially since the material is presented in an understandable and comprehensive manner.
