Set in a hospital for crippled children, this novel explores one of the most difficult and troubling aspects of life -- the meaning of pain and suffering. The adolescent hero, 'Tortuga' or Turtle, takes his name from the oddly shaped mountain near the hospital and from the rigid cast that encloses his body. In spite of incapacity, disfigurement, and neglect, Tortuga discovers the courage to transcend tragedy.
