内容説明

Electrical discharges in gases are phenomena well known to humans for a long time but, due to lack of knowledge, they have often been regarded with fear. One can think of lightning, northern lights or St. Elmos fire as examples. In the course of the nineteenth century electricity became increasingly available and people started experimenting with discharges for purposes of radio transmission, lighting, etc. It was soon realized that the discharge behavior was very strongly dependent on parameters such as electrode voltage and distance, current and/or current density, pressure and gas composition. The subject of this book is electrical discharges created by humans and it is probably older than most people might think. Two major applications of electrical discharges have been developed more than a century ago. Werner Von Siemens patented the ozonizer in 1857 and its design has not been changed essentially since that moment. The electrostatic dust precipitator dates from the last decade of the nineteenth century. Both pieces of equipment are nowadays in use all over the world in many cases of pollution prevention. The present book treats the atmospheric gas discharge from two viewpoints: fundamentals and applications. Up to now such a book is not available in this field. Therefore, it may well serve scientists and engineers who enter this field. But also people who are already working in this area could be surprised by the variety of applications and progress that has been made in modeling.
