Autotech '99 the Automotive Industry event, brings together manufacturers, researchers, designers, users, industry groups, and academics to create a forum for the exchange of information and innovation. It is unique in offering information from industry and academics on the latest cutting edge advances in research, and major technological breakthroughs in the automotive world. This work focuses on the development of effective engineering training to meet the needs of the global automotive industry. The contributors to this volume are from industry, academic circles, consultancies, and government. A wide range of issues and innovations are presented and discussed. Lessons learned in educating automotive engineers can be equally applied to many other fields of industry. Key issues and areas are: company investment in education and development; solutions to the engineering skills gap; innovative and relevant undergraduate courses; learning through research in engineering; new course development; partnership projects; work-based learning; motorsport in education; case studies from industry. This text should be of interest to everyone involved in industry, in the education of engineers, and all those responsible for capturing the imagination of the engineers of tomorrow.
