Providing an overview of the intellectual context of crowd psychology, this study examines the socio-psychological frameworks applied by French, Italian and British crowd theorists to the study of collective behaviour. It summaries the biologically-derived views of these sociologists, and analyzes crowd psychology as an illiberal psychology of mass politics and as an elitist psychology of leadership and social control.
