Description
This encyclopedia presents a tremendous amount of information about capital punishment in the United States. There are entries on virtually every capital punishment decision rendered by the United States Supreme Court from its beginning through 1999 and entries are also provided for each Supreme Court Justice who has ever rendered a capital punishment opinion. Entries on jurisdictions that do or do not have capital punishment cite the present-day relevant death penalty laws of each jurisdiction and its judicial structure, with synopses of both their common and their unique features. There are entries that summarize the status of capital punishment in almost 200 nations of the world, famous and not so famous U.S. capital prosecutions, organizations that support and oppose capital punishment, capital punishment's impact on persons of African, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American backgrounds, on women, and on foreign nationals, and the various methods of execution. Capital punishment by the military is also included.
