Volume 58A of the Flora of Australia series is the third volume dealing with the lichens. It includes descriptions of some of the more robust and luxuriant lichens of cool-temperate south-eastern Australia (Lobariaceae and Sphaerophoraceae), as well as ecologically important soil-inhabiting groups in semi-arid and arid regions (Peltulaceae, Endocarpon and Placidium). Also in this volume are the first Flora of Australia treatments of crustose lichens and the Trichotheliaceae, a family that is most diverse on the bark and leaves of trees and shrubs in tropical rainforest. Complete or partial accounts of seven orders are provided, including nine families, 24 genera and 256 species and infra-specific taxa. Descriptions and discussion are supplemented by important references, synonomy, and information on type collections, chemistry, distribution, habitat and published illustrations.

This volume provides treatments of Pertusaria and Lecanora, two of the most speciose and ecologically significant crustose genera on rock and bark in Australia. Pertusaria exhibits a high degree of species endemism and is often dominant in tropical, temperate and alpine communities in eastern Australia. Lecanora occurs on rock, soil, and on trunks and canopy branches of trees in all ecosystems; some are especially prominent in the comparatively species-poor lichen floras of semi-arid and arid regions. Also included here is Usnea, a genus of robust and often luxuriant lichens ranging from almost rigid tufts on exposed, alpine rocks to metre-long skeins hanging from the canopies of temperate rainforest trees. Complete or partial accounts of nine families are provided in Volume 56A, including 17 genera and 287 species and infra-specific taxa. This brings to 1168 the number of Australian lichen species and infra-specific taxa treated in the four volumes published so far.

Volume 57 is the fifth volume of the Flora of Australia which documents the lichens. Here, we emphasise several speciose and ecologically significant families that colonise the bark of trees and shrubs in monsoon vine forest and in coastal and montane rainforest across northern Australia, viz. Graphidaceae, Phyllopsoraceae, Pyrenulaceae, Thelotremataceae and Trypetheliaceae. In addition, treatments are provided for prominent, mainly tropical and subtropical genera such as Dirinaria, Letrouitia, Pyxine and Strigula, as well as the more widely distributed Buellia s. str., Lepraria, Ramboldia and Tephromela. In contrast, the volume also includes lichens that are primarily associated with cool-temperate and montane habitats in south-eastern Australia, for example Nephroma, Peltigera, Thelocarpon and Umbilicaria. Complete or partial accounts of 21 families are provided in Volume 57, including 78 genera and 654 species and infra-specific taxa. One genus (Schizotrema, Thelotremataceae) and 27 species are described as new to science, and 35 new combinations are made. This work brings to 1822 the number of Australian lichen species and infra-specific taxa treated in the five volumes published.
