A schoolmaster, preacher, and newspaperman, Lovejoy (1802-1837) embodied the Puritan spirit in its most tenacious form. His idea of responsibility prohibited him from modifying his abolitionist stance and led to his murder at the hands of an anti-abolitionist mob. This biography is based on contemporary newspaper files and on correspondence between Lovejoy and his family.
